WiCA community check-in: The stats behind the Mission

It’s no secret that construction is changing, but not fast enough. Let’s take a look at the numbers that still define our industry:

  • Women represent just 14% of the UK construction workforce (ONS, 2023).
  • On site, that figure drops to just 1–2% (CITB, 2022).
  • Meanwhile, the industry needs over 250,000 new workers by 2027 to meet demand (CSN, 2023).
  • 1 in 5 women leave the industry within 5 years (Institute for Employment Studies, 2021).
  • Only 18% of construction apprenticeships are taken by women (DfE, 2023).
  • In the East of England, construction accounts for 7.5% of total jobs, but our gender gap remains one of the widest (ONS/CITB, 2023).

These numbers aren’t barriers, they’re calls to action. At WiCA, we’re building more than a platform. We’re creating a pipeline, a voice, and a shift in culture.

Whether you’re just starting out or decades in, your voice matters here.
